A Bikram Yoga class comprises a series of twenty-six postures and two breathing exercises, performed in a room heated to 40°c. It is a scientifically devised series of hatha yoga postures designed by Bikram Choudhury to bring balance, strength and flexibility into the body and mind.
The sequence of postures impacts every part of the body in the correct order; each posture a preparation for the next, maximising oxygenation and detoxification of the entire body. Bikram Yoga is a way of bringing vitality, health and an incredible sense of wellbeing. The heat facilitates stretching, prevents injury and promotes sweating which aids detoxification. It is natural healing for the human body.
Bikram Yoga is for everybody – from ages eight to eighty, of all different body shapes and sizes. A common misconception about Bikram Yoga is that you have to have a certain level of strength and flexibility in order to take the class. Flexibility is not a requirement and if you are not flexible, then you are an ideal candidate for Bikram Yoga. The object of participation in the class is to build flexibility, strength and balance and to improve your body, improve your mind and ultimately improve your life. All of these improvements come in time and that is why it is called a 'practice'.
